Phishing with Tragedy?
Less than 48 hours after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, that have tragically claimed so many lives, #cybercriminals are being seen wielding the crisis in fraudulent scams and schemes.
Less than 48 hours after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, that have tragically claimed so many lives, cybercriminals are being seen wielding the crisis in fraudulent scams and schemes.
Cybercriminals never take a break from their activities and latest attempts spotted show even more unscrupulous behaviours. With thousands of lives lost and thousands more missing and injured, fraudsters are targeting the humanity present in those around the world who wish to send aid.
The scammers pose as charitable foundation representatives seeking donations to help those affected by the natural disasters that struck early Monday 06th Feb. This same platform was utilised by likely the same bad actors who used it for fraudulent campaigns seeking aid for Ukrainians displaced by war, and for the armed forces in Ukraine, with a similar ruse making the rounds in late December of last year.
This is just an early example of what is likely to be a flood of misleading and fraudulent schemes yet to come; fraudsters always look to exploit the vulnerabilities and emotions evoked by tragedies and natural disasters when they strike, stealing money and personal information by capitalising on the empathy of communities.
If you are concerned that your users could be at risk to these insidious acts, Secure IT Consult is partnered with KnowBe4 who offer security awareness training and phishing security tests to ensure your users are not at risk. IT Pros have realised that simulated phishing tests are urgently needed, especially when bad actors such as these seek to use our empathy against us.
