That statistic isn’t just about AI risk. It’s a reflection of how exposed existing environments already were.

The AI Attack Surface Is Bigger—and Harder to See

The pattern is consistent: organisations are moving quickly to adopt AI, but security isn’t always keeping pace.

The difference is speed. AI compresses the timeline and amplifies the impact.

While many organisations are still working through governance frameworks and acceptable use policies, attackers are already operationalising AI.
It’s being used to:
- Automate reconnaissance and identify vulnerabilities faster
- Generate highly convincing phishing and social engineering campaigns
- Develop malware that adapts as it encounters defences

That creates a clear imbalance.
Attackers are operating at machine speed. Most defenders still aren’t.
Where Traditional Strategies Start to Break Down
When you step back, AI is exposing a few consistent weaknesses in how cybersecurity has been approached.
Fragmentation is one of the biggest.
Many organisations are running dozens of separate tools, each solving a specific problem but rarely working together seamlessly. The result is patchy visibility and slower response times.

Operations are still largely human speed.
Security teams are skilled, but they’re often reliant on manual processes. AI-driven attacks don’t wait for analysis or escalation paths.
And then there’s compliance.
For years, passing audits has been treated as a proxy for being secure. AI challenges that assumption very quickly.
Compliance might demonstrate control. It doesn’t guarantee resilience.
The Shift Towards AI-Driven Defence
To keep up, security has to evolve in the same direction as the threat landscape.
That’s why there’s a growing shift towards AI-driven cybersecurity using machine learning to detect, correlate, and respond to threats in real time.
This includes:

The underlying idea is straightforward: if attacks are happening at machine speed, defence has to as well.
Securing the AI Lifecycle
One area that’s still often overlooked is the AI lifecycle itself.
Security isn’t just about protecting the environment AI runs in. It also needs to cover:
- How models are built and trained
- Where data comes from and how it’s validated
- How models are deployed into production
- What happens once they’re live and interacting with real users
Without this, organisations risk deploying systems they don’t fully trust or understand.
At that point, it’s not just a security issue it’s a business risk.
What This Means at Board Level
For senior leaders, this isn’t a purely technical conversation.
AI is forcing a broader reassessment of how risk is understood and managed.
It raises questions like:
- Can our security model keep up with how quickly we’re adopting new technology?
- Do we actually have visibility across our environment, or just pockets of it?
- Are we securing AI systems to the same standard as everything else?
- Are we optimising for compliance, or for real-world resilience?
If those questions are difficult to answer, that’s usually a signal in itself.
Moving Towards a More Resilient Approach
Addressing this doesn’t come down to adding more tools. In many cases, it’s the opposite.
A few consistent shifts are happening:
- Consolidation of platforms to reduce fragmentation
- Greater focus on identity as the core control layer
- Security built into AI development, not added afterwards
- Increased automation across detection and response
- Closer alignment between security and business strategy
None of these are entirely new ideas. What’s changed is the urgency.
Final Thought: AI as an Unavoidable Audit
AI is often framed as a disruptive threat.
In practice, it’s acting more like an audit, except it runs continuously and doesn’t miss much.
It highlights where systems don’t connect, where controls fall short, and where strategies rely too heavily on assumptions.
For organisations willing to adapt, that visibility is valuable.
